NIST Standards Services Curricula Development Grant

Steve Linthicum is working with Nancy Jones at Coastline Community College to submit a grant proposal for $75,000 that will provide funding for faculty to develop or update labs in the NETLAB+ environment.

As part of this process, Steve has contacted John Sands at Moraine Valley Community College (Illinois) to discuss his compensation structure. Preliminary estimates for faculty compensation are $1,000 for a course outline and general course content, and $150 for each lab. This would equate to $3,250 for a 15-lab course. Additional investigative work is being done and Steve will distribute the proposal to the group when completed.

Six Professional Edition (PE) systems were deployed for specific ICT curricula and one PE system for R&D. Two more will be deployed as interest and curricula grow.

Bay Area Shared NETLAB

Nearly $1 million has been approved for the Bay Area shared NETLAB project, which will be hosted by Cabrillo College. Installation is set to take place in July and 25 of 28 Bay Area colleges plan to participate in this project. One requirement of its use is that each partner must offer at least one course that will use NETLAB.

During the year a top priority will be to create a sustainable model. Together the collaborative will be looking for ways to sustain NETLAB funding through additional grants, Perkins funding, and collecting access changes (through a lab manual fee) from students taking the classes and doing the labs.
