I wanted to get a topic going so we could discuss our current solutions for backing up our core VM's before the release of the NETLAB VE edition so everyone can have an informed choice. Since I assume most colleges are not going to have a full back up sweet available to its netlab admins I think one key focus should be on open and free back up solutions. To quote many discussions I've had with VMware techs "Snapshots are not backups", while snapshots are the quickest way to recover from a upgrade or update failure, it is not quite as useful if you lose an entire system, so for our discussion purposes please do not simply sate a VM snapshot.
The BACCC NETLAB+ systems utilize VEEAM free edition to manage and take its backups. Unfortunately the free edition does have some limitation, mainly that most of the advanced features from VEEAM have been cut out (instant recovery, quick backups, delegation, etc.), but I have found it to be more than enough to do manual backups of my web servers, infrastructure monitoring system, and other core internal servers, so I would recommend looking at it if you are currently without a backup solution (or scripted backups like I used to do)
I look forward to hearing alternate solution that are being utilized out there.
