INTRODUCTION TO VIRTUALIZATION COURSE

  • 4-8 hour course teaches basics of virtualization
  • Labs through NETLAB+, utilizing VMware workstations
  • Describes virtual machines, virtual data center, storage and how all relate to school & work environment
  • Good for students and instructors
  • Available in NETLAB+ VE course as content update

  • Career pathways implemented as Guided Pathways in the CA Community College
    • Help student achieve academic goals
    • GPS system for students as they navigate through higher education experience
    • Guided Pathways announcement by State Chancellor’s Office (Sept. 5, 2017)
  • ICT-Digital Media Sector Branded Pathways 
    • Business Information Worker (BIW)
    • IT Technician Pathway (ITTP)
  • IT Technician Pathway
    • Helps students find training to earn IT certifications & quickly get IT-related jobs
    • Students can build upon skills, gain additional certifications, better-paying, higher-level jobs (4 Phases, including cybersecurity and networking specializations – see diagram below)
    • Helps students who have not historically been successful in 2-year and 4-year programs

Using NETLAB+ FOR HANDS-ON CYBERSECURITY WORKSHOPS & COMPETITIONS
Sam Bowne, Instructor, City College of San Francisco

  • Used NETLAB+ to run VMware image during DEF CON Malware Analysis Capture the Flag competition with 80 students
  • NETLAB+ also works with more complicated environments, too (8-10 machines), as required for the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition
    • Sam plans to develop recommendations and training materials for instructors wanting to participate
  • NETLAB+ opens up classes to wider audience & teaches important skills
  • Gamified learning a good way to encourage students to learn & practice basic skills
  • Sam presenting 2-hour hands-on workshop at ICT Winter Educator’s Conference January 4-5, 2018
